Only checking, do you mean Kanto or Johto caves? Or only caves in general? Here's a cave question. Rock Tunnel in Red/Blue, or Ice Path in Gold/Silver?

Only checking, do you mean Kanto or Johto caves? Or only caves in general? Here's a cave question. Rock Tunnel in Red/Blue, or Ice Path in Gold/Silver? Rock Tunnel. I'm not as much a fan of the puzzle-based tunnel, it seems slightly artificial. Someone went and laid out the inhospitable icy cavern in order to create convenient puzzles for players. The Rock Tunnel is dark at first, and seems like a vaguely natural place in contrast. It sets up 'Lavender Town' well, with the journey through darkened nature making the Lavender Town adventure seem more organic. If you just went there after Cerulean, it would merely come across as a weird contrast in tone. Instead, you're led in the dark to a place some way away from the prior cities. Led away from your previous area, you are exposed to the Lavender Town area more thoroughly. Of course, the Rock Tunnel is interesting to hang around in. You might miss that aspect on your earlier runs. In G/S, I'm less enthusiastic about it. Honestly, Victory Path would also be a nice place to hang around in R/B. It's more elaborate, with creatures like Moltres around. You're probably too stressed/excited the first time you arrive, though. Also nice are the tower in Lavender, the Mansion in Cinnabar, the islands right of Cinnabar (with Arcticuno if you're into that), and the Cerulean Cave. Not that you're the only one waiting around in the last of those. Mt. Moon could be good for this, if you got rid of everyone in it. Silence Bridge as well, funnily. I'm quite fond of the area between Lavender and Fuchsia, however it's usually too crowded to hang around in. G/S has Tin Tower, which is a nice change in the building design. The buildings in R/B rarely had as much open space without characters, etc. Union Cave is also a decent area, the lay-out of it is quite nice compared to some other caves in these games.

That seems like an exhaustive list. Do you prefer the Pokémon tower of Lavender, or Pokémon Mansion? I agree that Victory Road is nice. Would you still prefer Rock Tunnel? Which of those is worse than Ice Path?
I really agree with the Silence Bridge suggestion, I think with less people you could just walk around that long journey for ages. What do you think of going to the Safari Zone for sightseeing? Obviously it has limited steps, so it's not that useful unless you mostly stay in place. It has sme nice places to do that though!

The Safari Zone? Isn't the area under Cerulean quite similar? I like that journey, however some of the suggestions in this thread are more good.

I prefer Lavender slightly. You can see the similarities, each has a slightly atmospheric area with a few darker characters alongside you. The Pokémon at the Mansion are exotic and interesting. Still, the Tower seems to have deeper themes due to the dead creatures and ghosts, as well as not being used for scavenger hunts. The atmospheric nature of Lavender Town is a clear focus, it also has nice scenery with the graveyard mazes. There's not that much to separate them, however. I'd rather Rock Tunnel than Victory Road. Rock Tunnel has less urgency or clear direction to it, it stands alone more and leads into the mysterious Lavender Town. It also comes earlier, which is useful. Victory Road is still elaborate enough to stick around in, however Rock Tunnel does a similar thing with less furore. Honestly, most of those listed seem more efficient than the icy path from G/S. I think that R/B has some nice free-roaming areas, rather than the slightly artificial icy journey. Thanks for the good questions, Lapras. I agree that the Safari Zone is interesting, especially if you removed step limits. I don't mind the idea of sightseeing. It's not like there's much urgency there, so if you wish to stay still that's alright. You could probably find somewhere nice, as you said. However, the Safari Zone does suit exploration. As such, the limit on how long you can stay is quite problematic. I agree with you on Silence Bridge.

I agree with your problems with Ice Path. The puzzles feel kinda silly out there. I like the idea, though, this empty icy place. I guess ice wasn't prominent enough in some games. Still, it's difficult to do it right in this series.

I agree, the icy setting would be nice. Perhaps it's not necessary in the first games. Those already have a variety of interesting caves, an icy cave might not have the place for a proper build-up. It would still be a decent idea, however. G/S could do with a proper icy area like what you suggested, however. That would be quite useful.

I kind of like the idea of a Pokémon game featuring a lot of icy caves, etc. You could feature creatures based on the Yeti, or other threats.
Anyway, another idea. Would anyone have liked a fire-based area in Gold/Silver?

So like a survival game on an icy mountain?

As Crabhammer says, the situation suggests the atmosphere of a 'survival' game. You could have one icy cave instead, with some snowy wilderness around it if you'd like. That could be quite an intense and claustrophobic atmosphere, good for uncanny creatures like the Yeti. Something like a volcano would be a nice area, especially if it was slightly remote. I'd have appreciated that.

Yeah, sort of. Like you're in this mysterious mountain, with Yeti-based Pokémon.
The volcano idea is good.

Didn't a Spy Fox game start like that?
I find your idea acceptable. Would you hope for something scary or Slenderman-like?
Do you much like Diglett's cave? It's quite small, in some ways. I suppose that the Vermillion ships are always slightly similar, although less natural. It is a separated-off area in some ways, of course.

I like the idea of a game where you get stranded on the ship. That could be complex and deep at once...
