Sort of, yea. They sy:
"To complete the island challenge, young trial-goers must overcome the trials in store on each of the four islands. These trials are not limited to battling with Pokémon. They take a variety of forms, such as finding items or completing tests of knowledge. You will not be able to accomplish them with ordinary methods!"
Sounds worse. Item-finding?

Pokémon: Generation Fetch Quests 24/7. Pokémon: Fetch Quests Sun. Pokémon: Fetch Quests Moon. With the possible addition of Pokémon: Fetch Quests Eternity.
They do mention something like a Gym, however, though this is probably just a distraction or tourist trap:
"The final trial on each island is called the grand trial. It is a Pokémon battle against the kahuna who leads that island. If a trial-goer succeeds in clearing this grand trial, he or she will be publicly recognized as having cleared all of the islandâs trials and can move on to the next island."
Why not have Kakuna lead the islands? Surely that would be much better. So much for an innovative take on Gyms, now we just have Gyms + Fetch quests. It's like a lame version of Cerulean City in G/S/C.
In that sense, they're not changing that much, just adding mini-games as a central part of the game. This might not be particularly good. Other things like totems also seem problematic, as they're ultimately just clustering together Pokémon to the point where intimate or personal interaction with them isn't an option, where they lose their identity. Still, it might be worth avoiding the mini-games and just training for a while, if you happened to get this for whatever reason, in order to keep some focus on Pokémon battles despite the game's attempt to leave this behind. That would so to speak evade the game and allow you to focus on the creatures and form of battle, and hence give you some freedom from it quite easily.

There's a Pokémon apparently named Pyukumuku now. So it's apparently like a nauseous version of X & Y.

Props, Krabby. There should be a new version of that 'YMCA' song replacing the chorus with 'Pyukumuku.'
Anyway, reception so far has been weird, anticipation but hardly any focus or strong preferences concerning what we have been shown. It's mostly just been a conventional 'game is released, fans accept it as they are expected to,' in a slightly robotic manner. Something of a case of 'Much Ado and all, but Nothing really stands out.'
In all likelihood future interactions with this game, however this might be, will be relying on momentum from this. The game is in some ways shifting towards a younger audience, compared to the more formalised structure of the earlier games. They would possibly want to keep the plot in this direction as well.
Pokémon at this point has become a weird game or scene, where people pretty much just take the 'Pokémon' as merely added designs rather than considering whether these are things they would want to see fight. They might be verging - as they often tried to avoid before through things like Physical/Special types and artifice - on encouraging animal violence with fairly explicit depictions, in forms which have long been banned in that manner. Placing this all in LOL Hawaii makes it seem a bit off-putting. Something like Team Plasma might trouble players too much for this game.
Anyway, outside of this, if I may 'play with madness' briefly, let us make a few observations about where this might all be heading. We have a region called 'Paradise' in there. This seems to put the rest in the shade a bit, so it might have to be 'nerfed' as a good force in the plot - as might be a possibility, due to the mention of research or experimentation, admittedly a tired theme for this series which they might not want to re-explore in detail. Still, it seems likely that the main dynamic if there is one will involve attempting to circle around this area. There is presumably an attempt at some sense of others watching over you in the plot segment. This seems a bit similar to Lillie's situation as presented - she is faced with a community, Pokémon trainers, and may be uncertain about whether to join them or if she can do this properly, but nonetheless is pressed into helping them out and involvement with them generally. In that sense, Lillie is something like a protagonist. If they wanted to, they could just have Lillie have an elaborate plot-line to pretend that the players were highly active as well, and increase the sense of a journey to undertake.
Their new additions, which might decentre the focus on certain Pokémon, tend to orbit around the general tropes of Mega-Evolution. They are hence similar, but mean that Pokémon get even less opportunity to stand out. In a sense, while Mega-Evolution was just one mechanic, now they're trying to make it into a general theme, including with the legendaries, or in brief it is spreading through the game. Hence, this kind of thing - transition while in battle - is likely to be effective through the game, perhaps extending to item use, etc. This will probably favour Grass and Fairy types, not great news for Litten - although it depends on the specifics. Notably, Litten is also probably the one closest to a conventional starter.
Outside of this, you will perhaps again be called on to restore things to normal, in the admittedly somewhat nonexistent social structures of Pokémon. Yeah, Pokémon plots are shallow sometimes, at least early on they weren't too elaborately presented. It's plausible that the plot will be resolved somewhat amicably, given the recent direction of the series - but that could depend. Something like Team Plasma in this game might be too much, for reasons mentioned, so they might prefer something more simplistic which means players don't have to focus on what they're up to. Team Rocket would be too serious for it, generally. Things like Lillie seem reminiscent of Melody, so that might be useful.
It might be that with characters like Lillie involved, the player might receive a lot of support in the plot missions. They usually have to lurk around for some reason, after all. This was not the case in R/B, and the major missions of G/S, and these were in many ways better for it. Due to requirements for neatness at the end, things will probably have to be divided neatly into categories, which Pokémon can have issues with. Hence, the 'good guys' in previous games were generally kept fairly lax - things like the Silph Co., occasional company on missions, etc. - and not dedicated to this, so it remains to be seen if they try to pull this one off conventionally here, akin to perhaps Teams Aqua and Magma in R/S/E - at least one of them was an ally. That might be slightly new, but in all likelihood making both Lillie and Aether into close allies would be too much, and compromise the plot.
So far, Alola's Pokémon line-up looks like the Carly Rae Jepsen album that never was - apart from Litten, who is a cat. We shall have to see what else awaits later.

Pokémon S&M so far could perhaps be summarized by looking closely at an image of an unmoving Pokémon battle, such as this one:

Thanx for that.
Id like to start a game wth a lvl 1 Gengar.
Intresting about the Pokémon battling being more of a prblem, they might nt be focused on it by now. They're adding tto many types of things, and it might make th game less focused.

True. They're adding a new Gym system not that different from the previous, though supposed to be new, so they are seemingly focussing more on a shiny look rather than battle or the content.
Hey, FlyingMurkrow, Krabby doesn't think you're cool any more. He'd prefer a lvl. 1 Gengar.
