Well, Pikachu was both rare and - at least by design and before Brock - weak. They included a rare Pokémon right before the first Gym, but this wasn't one which could actually fight against it, usually. As such, Pikachu was something that it was considered important to catch, and in an important zone, but which wasn't exclusively designed for battle - it was something that people were to catch because they wanted a Pikachu. In addition, it showed up early on, so unlike later rares it was in an important zone nearer Pallet Town than otherwise. Hence, everyone encountered it, even if some didn't catch it. Pikachu comes up against a wall right after it's obtained, so in that sense it's separated from battle and more easily a mascot or symbol than a creature. In addition, its appearing in Viridian Forest is otherwise slightly strange - why is a thunder rat suddenly showing up there? It might throw people otherwise. Other than that, Charmander and Pikachu are two of the Pokémon best known from the series, and they're the ones that have the most significant opening problems. This gives them a sense of plot and separation from battle, which means that they can be symbolic. In addition, Pikachu is quite unlike many of the other early Pokémon portrayed. It has thunderbolts coming out of it already, or is already attacking: As the action in Pokémon is mostly about attacks, or this is the most obviously exciting element, mostly, part of Pikachu's sprite is an attack, so they're already quite different from some of the other earlier Pokémon and likely to catch on, if you like.

Informative as always.
Thanx, the part about Charmander and Pikachu is intresting. Pikachu does have sparks, and it's poplar for Thundrbolt, so for somthing where it can just stand still nd attack. So tht might help.
Still, if Pikachu is symbol of Pokémon, it doesn't hve its own journy. So thn is there a focus?

There might be a sense in which Pikachu lacking its own journey is symbolic of the series as a whole being made about the 'trainer,' or audience, rather than the Pokémon. Good point, CRH. The Pokémon are just there to make the 'trainers' feel better, if you like - although obviously this can't go too far, or they would lose the Pokémon, which is what makes them different. Hence, they would probably generally have to settle for an attempt at a 'selective' focus as the audience is concerned, or hemming in the trainer focus by trying to limit this in certain ways using the Pokémon. These are often hostile, and not as Pikachu (admittedly a tamed one) is usually portrayed. As such, there might be something like a 'canon' team for each game, but this might still not be the best way of using the Pokémon, if one were to focus on their traits more clearly.
So in that sense they do lack focus on the Pokémon, but they try to at least hem this in using the creatures. This is more notable in the game.

Good point! I kinda want to try to avoid that in a Gold runthrough I'm doing now. Pikachu does encourage you to catch different types of Pokémon along with it, so maybe Pikacgu with Clefairy and the 'cute' Pokémon would be a bad idea?

Pikachu and Onix in a team could be dangeros, if possible early on.

The Electric and Rock/Ground combo is usually effective. Notable also is Mareep and Geodude/Onix from G/S, as well as Pikachu and Geodude, etc., from R/B. They already take many opponents out of the game, so from there you just need to adapt.
If there were a Dragon involved eventually, it would be highly frustrating for opponents. Other than that, a space for Mewtwo or a Psychic type, probably, at least in R/B, and then a Fire type to deal with Grass, etc. This would be effective in seeing off most of the game, if used correctly. Still, this might be slightly different in G/S, where Dragons show up quite late. You might prefer an Ice-type, so that the others can rest against certain types. Magnemite with a Rock-type and Psychic type should beat almost everything in the League segment, but does have additional weaknesses. Once you do this and beat the League 100 times while giving all of your Pokémon rude names, you might get Pikablu, but that's less feasible. You might just end up with a Pikachu that knows Kamehameha.
